Shackles

I bought these Military Shackles. They are "3/4" MIDLAND SHACKLE, CLEVIS, WLL 5 ton alloy bolt & nut type pin w/cotter"



I started looking up info on what difference is between shackle types (carbon vs. Alloy) and found a pretty good web page that among other things said this "There are basically two types, carbon steel and alloy steel. Known as grade A (carbon steel) or B (Alloy steel)"

This would indicate to me that Carbon is superior to Alloy. Yet when I look at the following chart for WLL etc.. It appears the alloy shackle is considerably stronger. Just found that interesting.

Hardness trades off with flex vs fracture and strength comes from that.

Thanks for the link. One subject it seems to skip over is winches that use Synthetic Rope and how that differs from winching with wire rope.

Synthetic is stronger, lighter, easy on hands and doesn't chop off your limbs when it breaks under tension.

It's a little old so synth line was harder to find when he wrote it.

The concepts stand though. Indy basically has it right. Synth line is lower maintenance than cable, and since nobody actually does maintenance on their cable thats a huge plus!

Synthetic line also requires more attention to how and where it is routed in order to not fray it. Once it starts it goes way quicker than steel.

Synthetic does have it's benefits, but Ive done some stupid things with my cable looping over or around things that I wouldn't have gotten away with it I was using synthetic. I've done A LOT of winching with winches way bigger than a jeep could carry and I prefer steel cables for the rugged toughness. The standard, pulling a stuck vehicle use is by far the least of the work my winch sees, it's usually getting used for something that it probably shouldn't be. Synthetic wins in a lot of categories, but toughness isn't one of them.

Same here. I use my winch for a lot of other things, very little if any has it been used to winch another vehicle out that is stuck. Its either winching a tree or log out of the road where the cable might be rubbing on another limb that is in the way, or winch a pig or deer up the back where the cable is digging into the dirt or rocks. Cable works best for me.

Switched from Glass Bead to Aluminum Oxide media in the blaster tonight. What a difference. Cut right through.





Couple coats of bedliner paint.
