Garbage disposals

Anyone know anything about these things? Went to turn it on tonight and all it does is humm at me. Followed some instructions from a few websites. Nothing really blocking up top (just a few pieces of wilted lettuce and onions in there and that's it). I can spin it freely on top and with the hex key on the bottom of the unit so it doesn't seem jammed. I'm guessing it's just shot. It's probably the original one from when the house was built in 2001. The best info I could find for this situation since it's not stuck is that the motor windings are probably shot and that's why it won't turn.

I'd go with the warranty and tell them you want to upgrade while your at it. Usually just pay the difference plus 20% . Changing a gd only takes about 15 minutes but if connections start dripping or other fittings are rotted or cracked ( trust me it happens) you'll be glad it's someone else's headache

Ok cool I'll check into if I can get it upgraded like that. Would definitely be nice.

Wow, that was quick. Within 10 minutes of calling the warranty people I had a call from the plumber saying he could be there in 20 minutes. Early lunch time. Ended up just going with a direct replacement of another 1/3rd HP unit this time around. They had it on the truck ready to go and didn't need any approval to do work after verifying the old unit was shot.
He said they did have 3/4 HP but just installed it yesterday so they'd have had to get another and come back on another day. Already on the truck they had the 1/3rd and also had a 1/2 HP for $45 over our $60 warranty deductible, I didn't think that was worth it for such a small increase. He also had a full 1 HP model but that was $180 extra, no way was that happening lol.
Maybe 20 minutes total and they were done. I think that must the quickest service call I've ever had from getting things started to the actual appointment etc.
