I have a handheld and Kenwoods TMV71A at home. Going to put a similar one in the Jeep as well.
For the most part handheld (with a good antenna) will do the job especially when we go wheeling and you want to talk to the group. However it can never be as good as the actual radio setup in your rig.
Handheld puts out only about 5 to 8 watts vs 50 onwards on actual radio. Also actual radio is easier to use.
Start with a handheld and see how you like it. The best part of HAM radio is that you can pick and choose as small or as big of a radio/antenna combo that you want to use.
