Best year for TJs and XJs?

Howdy friends,

My sister's looking to buy a Jeep, and she's looking at something under $8k. Sounds like she likes XJs and TJs. I know she should get the 4.0 for the TJ, but is that the same motor that's sometimes used in the XJ as well? Any motor/trans combos for her to avoid, or anything else she should know?

The 4.0L engine is the same. there were some cyl. head changes, thru the years. XJ might give her the best bang for the buck, unless she likes the idea of driving with the top off. IMO, the best year TJ's are 2001+ years.

Try to get the one with D44.

98 5.9L ZJ

For the XJ I would definitely get a post 96 for the OBD2, and honestly a 97+ for the full electrical refresh. The '00 and '01 got the LPD30 and are rather neutered though.

The last few years of xj 97/01 were very good and had same dash as a tj. If you found a 5 speed with an hp30 and d44 itd be a keeper. You wanna steer clear of the awd versions. Look for the 231 or 242 stamp on the back on the tcase or ur gonna have problems

I prefer 02/06 Tj's because they ditched the distributor and lut disc brakes on the rear d44 but the cats and exhaust manifold got more complicated.

Both are so easy to modify for cheap itll be a good buy iether way

No XJ had AWD, that was ZJ/WJ.

Nah, because the second gen 249 is a really good case, and no V8 had anything else.

Especially if it's mostly used on road.
